Critical Mass

Cycling AdvocacyAmarillo has come a long way in regard to its acceptance of cyclist. However, we think everyone would agree that there is still room for improvement.  OTC has worked hard since its inception to increase awareness and promote the rights of cyclist.  It is the position of the OTC Board that critical mass events are not effective and should be avoided. In fact, in some cities where these events have taken place they have done more harm than good.  Critical mass events are often seen as a deliberate attempt to obstruct traffic and be disruptive.  These types of activities will only create further conflict and disrespect between cyclists and motorist.

The key to making the roads safer is to develop mutual respect between cyclists and motorist.  We have often seen cyclists blow through stop signs or intentionally impede traffic.  These actions reflect poorly on all cyclists.  Cyclists deserve the respect of motorist but cyclists must respect the laws of the road and the rights of the motorist as well.

The Critical Mass Event is not supported by the OTC Board instead we encourage the promotion of bike advocacy through positive interaction with motorist and education of the community at large of the legal rights of cyclists.

Cycling Advocacytbcfernando writes "Dear Cyclist,

In years past you committed to make Texas a great place to cycle - you supported the Texas Bicycle Coalition as a member. Thank you for your confidence and trust. Please renew that membership now.

You may have noticed that you haven't received your usual renewal notice from us recently. Though we still value you as a member, the administrative work our membership requires is a big job, and as a nonprofit with limited resources, sometimes we have to make the tough decision to allocate those resources to bike advocacy.

These administrative challenges inspired us to look for creative solutions, and that's why as you renew online, you'll notice that we have some new membership options - you can now join BikeTexas as a monthly member! We're very excited to be able to offer this option because it's easier for us and for you, the member.

When you renew as a monthly member:
  • your annual membership dues are divided into convenient, manageable monthly contributions from your credit or debit account. And you don't have to remember to renew each year!
  • the staff time, money and paper we previously spent sending you renewal letters instead go directly towards improving cycling in Texas. Monthly contributions also provide predictability, so that we can more easily plan our advocacy efforts through the next months and years.

So don't wait - renew now and help us keep working for you, and for the future of cycling in Texas!

Cycle Safely!

BikeTexas Kids Kup is a FREE, fun, off-road bike event designed to produce smiles on the faces of all young participants as they finish the race course. Every child receives a medal.

Age range is 12 all the way down to tykes on trikes and training wheels. Parents can run behind and “help” the younger folks. If your child wants to be in Kids Kup, he or she is old enough.

Helmets are required. Any standard kids bike in good repair is fine.

After a bicycle and helmet safety session, long-time youth bike racing experts Bill and Jacque Payne divide the kids into age-appropriate groups for the races. Every child gets a goodie bag and there is a drawing for free helmets after the event.

Many Kids Kup cyclists graduate to Bill and Jacque’s Shimano Youth Series mountain bike racing program and participate in the TMBRA adult races on Sunday morning.
